Last night I received a message informing me that I won a $50 gift card to a local restaurant.
The contest to win the gift card came from a local movie theater on social media, who asked a question, and said the best answer will get an undisclosed prize. The question was: "What two movies from two different time periods, preferably one classic and one modern, would make a great double feature?" For fun I submitted an answer, and out of over 300 responses my choices won.
It's sort of by a combination of circumstance and reflection that I gave the winning answer. Here's the story.
A few weekends ago one of my favorite local theaters, a cinema that dates back over a hundred years, reopened after many months, and their first weekend they showed Casablanca, so I went to see it. It's a classic great film that I usually try to see on the big screen whenever I get an opportunity.
A few days later I went to the movies again and was running a bit late for what I wanted to see, but noticed they were playing Raiders of the Lost Ark, which I did not know, so I decided to see that again.
Both of these films are two of my favorites that I can see over and over again without getting tired of them.
Having seen both of these movies numerous times, especially Raiders, it was while watching Raiders that I noticed something I never noticed before - both of these movies are basically the same thing, I mean they share many similarities.
Watching Raiders of the Lost Ark, I felt the same feelings and got the same vibes watching Casablanca just a few days earlier. I was then convinced that Raiders was definitely inspired by Casablanca. I then looked it up on the internet, and found that indeed it was. In fact, I felt pretty stupid for never noticing something so obvious before, especially with Raiders of the Lost Ark being easily one of my favorite movies ever. Then I thought how great it would be to see both movies back to back, debating in my head which movie should be seen first.
The debate is still unresolved in head.
A few days later, scrolling through social media, I came across this contest. I didn't know what the prize was, but I submitted my two choices - Casablanca and Raiders of the Lost Ark, along with one sentence why I thought these two movies would make a great double feature.
A few days pass, having forgotten about the contest, when I check my messages and my win is revealed. I laughed.
If circumstances and reflection had not led me to that answer just days before, I would not have thought to submit it, and I would not have won the $50 gift card.
Now I'm eagerly waiting for my gift card to arrive in the mail, so I can eat a good meal at a new restaurant just because I was too stupid to have never noticed before something that was so obvious, and it was fresh in my mind at a time when it would benefit me.

I'm sharing this story because it is a good excuse for me to encourage people to watch these two movies as a double feature, and count all the similarities in your head. As for which to see first, you can decide for yourself.
